Accessibility
Spell Beasts is designed to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA: the children’s app, the teacher app and these pages.
In the children’s app
- Keyboard.Everything can be done with a keyboard alone, with a clear focus ring. Spellings can be typed on the on-screen keyboard or a real one.
- Screen readers.Buttons and pictures have labels, and important changes are announced.
- Less movement.Spell Beasts follows the device’s reduce-motion setting, and grown-ups can choose less movement too.
- Easier reading.More space between letters and lines. Words are set in Andika, a typeface designed for literacy, with single-storey a and g and clearly different b, d, p and q.
- Page tints.Cream, blue, green or rose paper for children who read more comfortably on a colour.
- Works with the sound off. With reading aloud switched off, every activity shows the word, sentence or clue on screen instead.
- No time limits.Nothing ever runs out of time, and buttons are large enough for small fingers. Daily sessions and spelling tests are never timed; the only clock is in the Arcade’s optional Turbo speed, where a child can try to beat their own best time.
Grown-ups find these settings in the Grown-ups area. The app’s own About page says the same.
In the teacher app
Every task can be done by keyboard, with focus always visible. Text meets the contrast the guidelines ask for, nothing is shown by colour alone, every egg, mark and cell in the progress views has a text label, tables have proper headings, and reduced motion is respected.
On these pages
These pages work with a keyboard and a screen reader, at any width from a small phone up, and when zoomed. The short videos of the games have no sound, never start by themselves if your device asks for less movement or to save data, can be paused at any time, and each has a written list of what it shows.
